Ah, funk. Primark and my empty purse have clearly been conspiring against me. They've come up with this collection together because they know I won't be able to resist cheap and pretty/ pretty cheap clothes. It's not fair; I've been trying to spend less on throwaway fashion so that I can afford to eat splurge once in a while, and I've been trying to pare down my wardrobe so that it's easier to dress myself in the morning.
Guess this means that despite my best efforts my wardobe will remain bulky and I won't be able to afford that bag of oranges Stella McCartney's lemon and satsuma printed dress.
Woe is me.
Shopping at Primark is something I'v never done. I dislike shopping at the best of times though. It provides me with no sensory stimulation whatsoever.I choose not to think of the child labour/disposability of the clothes which accompany the soulless shopping experience. I like the collection pictured, but couldn't see myself pulling off any of those looks. But who does wear head to toe Primark? Nobody who loves fashion. The balance between quality/classic/fashion pieces is something that a true fashionista manages to achieve. You do it, so how would you feel if your dress was Primarni, shoes, bag, accessories etc. classic or high end? I think it would be better than having a high end dress and crap accessories. It's the little details that count, and nothing spoils an outfit more that a dodgy shoes and bag combo.
ReplyDeleteThanks for this Lucy, really interesting points. I try not to think about it as there's no true way of discovering the full story, but nevertheless the child labour issue does bother me. It bothers me more, however, that shops like Monsoon and Topshop also have been caught out using factories with child workers and terrible labour conditions. I think when people buy these clothes they take comfort in the high prices they pay for them, assuming that they are paying for quality craftmanship, which is often not the case.
ReplyDeleteYes, I wouldn't wear top-to-toe Primark, but I'm more likely to mix vintage accessories with a primark dress rather than anything classic or high-end. Clearly I'd always go high-end if I could afford it, but sadly I can't. I definitely need to invest in some shoes though, mine ALWAYS break on nights out.
